Swipe & Style: DIY Brushstroke Accent Wall Made Easy

While the bones of our basement powder room have been in place for a few years — and it has absolutely earned its keep through countless kiddo bathroom breaks (potty training, anyone?) — it never quite crossed the finish line. It functioned, yes. But it didn’t feel finished.

Until now.

One weekend, after walking past the space for the hundredth time and thinking, ugh, we really need to spruce you up, I finally rolled up my sleeves and gave this tiny bathroom the love it deserved. And my favorite part of the whole refresh?

The easiest, most delightfully imperfect DIY hand-painted brushstroke accent wall.

In a small bathroom like this, you really only need one standout detail — and this one brings all the personality.

Why This Bathroom Needed Some TLC

This little powder room has been fully functional for two years, but it never quite made it to the top of the project list. To be completely honest, it didn’t even have a mirror or proper light fixture until recently. (Kids can survive without many things. Apparently… mirrors are one of them.)

But because this bathroom connects directly to our basement playroom — and gets used every single day by our family — it was long overdue for a glow-up. I wanted to walk in and feel happy instead of mildly annoyed by the unfinished vibes.

And since we’re all about budget-friendly upgrades, the challenge was clear: give this bathroom charm and personality, without spending much at all.

The Vision

I wanted something fun, fresh, kid-approved, and still cohesive with the playroom next door — especially since the door stays open most of the time. The accent wall is now visible from the whole space, which makes the playful energy spill right into the room.

Lucky timing helped too — I asked for the mirror and light fixture as gifts this year, and once those were installed, everything fell into place.

The Brushstroke Wall

On a random Saturday night, armed with a leftover paint sample and a paintbrush from our kids’ craft bin, I decided to stop thinking and just start painting. No tape measuring. No fancy plan. Just little brushstroke flicks one at a time.

There are so many bloggers who inspired this look — I adore the dramatic navy strokes from An Indigo Day and the cozy neutral version from D&D at Home. But my wall? Beautifully imperfect. And that’s exactly what I love about it.

Is it precise? Nope.
Will it win design awards? Highly doubtful.
Do my kids think it’s the coolest thing ever? 100% yes.

And here’s the best part — the whole thing took less than two hours. In the time it would take to install wallpaper (not to mention the cost!), I had a one-of-a-kind accent wall that feels personal, playful, and full of character.

The Final Touches

To pull the look together, I repainted a sentimental shelf we received as a wedding gift from friends Dave and Pam (love you guys!) to match the wall. Then I added three black-and-white photos of our kids because what says “family bathroom” more than tiny smiling faces?

Since this is the only bathroom in our house with a window (yes, a tiny piece of luxury!), the light pours in beautifully. So I brought down a few houseplants needing a temporary winter home. Now, between the brushstrokes, greenery, and sweet little snapshots, the room feels happy and lived-in.

And just like that — done. No more cringing every time I walk by. Now it’s a space that makes me grin instead.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best ones. This brushstroke wall cost almost nothing, took barely any time, and gave our basement bathroom personality in a way wallpaper never could.

Would you ever try something bold and playful with paint? I promise — it’s not as scary as it looks!
